✅ What Does a Smog Check Inspector Do?
A Smog Check Inspector inspects and certifies vehicles that require emissions testing.
Inspectors do not perform repairs — they ensure vehicles meet California’s emissions standards.
📚 What Do You Need to Get Licensed?
To become a Smog Check Inspector in California, you must complete two required training levels and pass the state licensing exam.
Class Description
🔹 Level 1: Engine & Emission Control Fundamentals
Required if you have little or no experience.
Covers engine systems, emissions controls, diagnostics, and safety practices.
68-hour course at a BAR-certified school.
You may skip Level 1 if you have ASE certifications, an AA/AS degree or certificate in automotive tech, or relevant work/military experience.
🔹 Level 2: Smog Check Inspection Procedures
Required for all applicants.
Covers laws, inspection procedures, and testing standards.
Includes written exams and hands-on assessments.
28–30 hours of training at a BAR-certified school.
Training
🔄 License Renewal & Corrective Training
Inspectors must complete 4 hours of BAR-approved update training every 2 years for renewal.
We also offer BAR citation training if you’ve been required to complete corrective education.
