✅ What Are the Requirements?
To become licensed, you must pass a state exam and meet one of the following qualifications:
ASE Certifications: A6 (Electrical), A8 (Engine Performance), and L1 (Advanced Engine Performance),
AA/AS Degree in Automotive Technology + 1 year of engine performance repair experience,
Certificate in Automotive Technology (minimum 720 total hours, 280 in engine performance) + 1 year of experience,
2 years of engine performance repair experience + successful completion of BAR Specified Diagnostic & Repair Training in the last 5 years.

🔹 BAR Specified Diagnostic & Repair Training
An alternative to ASE certifications for new technicians.
Required for those with 2 years of experience seeking to take the licensing exam.
Covers advanced diagnostics and repair of Smog Check failures.
72 hours of training at a BAR-certified school (valid for 5 years).
🔹 Level 2 Smog Check Inspector Training
Also required for technicians pursuing Test & Repair certification.
