Qualifications and Duties of a Smog Check Repair Technician

Technician Duties

A Smog Check Repair Technician diagnoses and repairs Smog Check inspection failures. All Smog Check repairs must be completed by licensed Repair Technicians in a licensed Test-and-Repair or Repair-Only station.

Qualifications

To become licensed as a Smog Check Repair Technician, an individual must pass a state examination. Examination applicants must meet one of following four criteria:

  1. Possess certification in the categories of Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6), Engine Performance (A8) and Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L1) from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence; or
  2. Possess an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree or higher in Automotive Technology from a state accredited or recognized college, public school, or trade school, and have one year automotive repair experience in the engine performance area; or
  3. Possess a certificate in automotive technology from a state accredited or recognized college, public school, or trade school with a minimum of 720 hours of course work that includes at least 280 hours in the engine performance area, and have one year of automotive repair experience in the engine performance area; or
  4. Have a minimum of two years of automotive repair experience in the engine performance area, and successfully complete BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training within the last five years.

License Renewal

Applicants for license renewal must meet the following requirements:

Certification – Possess a valid certification in the categories of Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6), Engine Performance (A8) and Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L1) from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence;* and

Update Training – Provide proof of successful completion of 16 hours of update training from a BAR-certified training institution within the last two years.

ASE certification is not required for renewal applicants who have successfully completed the BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training within the last five years.

Class Descriptions

For Smog Check REPAIR Licenses: BAR Specified & Level 2: REQUIRED

BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair (Alternative ASE A6, A8, L1)

BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training represents one of four options a Repair Technician candidate may choose to qualify for the initial state licensing examination. Specifically, candidates with at least two years of engine performance repair experience may complete this training to qualify for the state licensing examination. The training provides students with comprehensive knowledge related to the diagnosis and repair of Smog Check failures.  
 
The training is a minimum of 72 hours and must be completed at a BAR-certified school (F.A.S.T). BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training is valid for 5 years.  Level 2 is require for initial Test & Repair certification.

* BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair training may be used to satisfy the ASE certification requirements for Smog Check Repair Technician license renewal.

For REPAIR License Renewal:

BAR Certified Repair Update Training: UT059 - Circuit Testing Tools & Strategies

Smog Check Repair Technicians are required to complete 16 hours of automotive technology update training every two years for license renewal.

4 hours of which can be the online inspector update training that is required to renew the inspector license and is located on BARs website at: http://www.bar.ca.gov/Industry/Training/index.html
